Make a big bead using small beads.
You need 30 small beads to make a big bead. To start, I recommend using small beads in 3 colors, 10 beads in each color. I used 10 blue beads for the equator of the sphere, 10 purple beads for the upper hemisphere, and 10 green beads for the lower hemisphere. Also, I suggest using tall beads for the start.
By the way, this big bead is in fact a dodecahedron rather than a sphere or a bead. Each dodecahedron has 12 pentagon-shaped faces and 30 edges.
To figure out how to build a geometric solid, such as a dodecahedron, an octahedron, or a cube, using beads, try to imagine that you are replacing each edge of the solid by a bead's hole. Initially, this will be easier to do using taller beads, but eventually you will be able to use regular round beads to do the same.
In the following instructions, we start by building a hemisphere like a dome, then turning it upside down, and then building the other hemisphere on top of it.
Each hemisphere consists of 6 pentagons, 5 of them around the perimeter, and 1 in the middle. We picture each bead as an edge, so we are going to use 10 blue beads for the belt of the hemisphere, and 10 purple beads for the rest.
Here are the step by step instructions:
1. Put 4 beads in the string for making the first loop, then add the common bead. Pay attention to the bead colors in the picture.

5. The first hemisphere is complete at this point, but for better results, you need to thread 4 more beads of the top loop with the two strings, two beads in each string.
6. Make a knot and hide the strings.
7. Good job! The first hemisphere is now complete.
8. Turn the hemisphere upside down, like a bowl.

9. Build the second hemisphere on top of the first one like another dome. Use green beads this time. The only difference is that now you already have the 10 blue beads at their intended positions. You have to use 2 these in each new loop. Therefore, between the 5 beads in every new loop, 2 beads come from an old loop of the first hemisphere.

While building the first hemisphere, pay attention to the fact that you often have 1 bead from the last loop in your string when making the next loop. This bead is a common bead. You are then adding 4 more beads, 2 in the right string and 1 in the left and 1 common, to complete the pentagon loop.
Now, to make the second hemisphere, whenever you need to add 2 beads to the right string, use 2 old blue beads from two different loops of the first hemisphere instead.
For the final step, you must be threading the 4 remaining beads using the two strings, making a knot, hiding them, and then cutting them. Good job! Your beaded bead is now ready.
